Understanding Drain Pipe Repair

Restoring the Flow of Your Home

A smoothly functioning drainage system is crucial for maintaining the overall health and hygiene of your home. However, over time, drain pipes can suffer wear and tear, leading to clogs, blockages, leaks, and even structural damage.

The Importance of Drain Pipe Repair

Drain pipes play a vital role in directing wastewater away from your home, preventing water damage, mould growth, and unsanitary conditions. Neglecting drain pipe issues can lead to more significant problems, including structural damage to your property, expensive repairs, and health hazards.

Common Drain Pipe Issues

Clogs: Accumulated debris, such as grease, hair, soap scum, and foreign objects, can create blockages in drain pipes, resulting in slow drainage or backups.

Leaks: Corrosion, cracks, or loose connections can cause leaks in drain pipes. Leaking pipes can lead to water damage, mold growth, and a decrease in water pressure.

Tree Root Intrusion: Tree roots are known to infiltrate drain pipes in search of water and nutrients, causing blockages and structural damage.

Pipe Corrosion: Over time, drain pipes made of materials like cast iron or galvanized steel can corrode, leading to weakened pipes and potential leaks.

Bellied Pipes: Sections of drain pipes can sag or develop bellies, which trap debris and wastewater, leading to clogs and backups.

Methods of Drain Pipe Repair

Chemical Drain Cleaners: For minor clogs, chemical drain cleaners can be effective (though very rarely and only if the blockage is close to the drain hole). They should be used sparingly, as frequent use can damage pipes and harm the environment.

Plumbing Snake (Auger): A plumbing snake is a tool used to dislodge clogs by physically breaking them apart. It’s suitable for clogs located close to the drain.

Hydro-Jetting: Hydro-jetting employs high-pressure water to clear stubborn clogs and remove debris from the inner pipe walls. It is effective for both residential and commercial applications.

Spot Repair: If a specific section of the drain pipe is damaged, spot repair involves excavating and replacing only the affected segment, minimising disruption to the entire system.

Professional Plumbing Services: While some smaller blocked drain issues can be resolved yourself, if the problem is hard to access or quite stubborn then it is advisable to seek the services of a professional drainage contractor likes ourselves who can provide repair or replacement solutions.

Preventive Maintenance

Preventing drain pipe issues is often more cost-effective and less disruptive than repairs. Regular maintenance practices include avoiding flushing non-biodegradable items, cleaning drain stoppers and strainers, and scheduling periodic professional inspections to identify and address potential problems early.

Maintaining a well-functioning drain pipe system is essential for the overall health and longevity of your home. By addressing common issues promptly and considering preventive maintenance, you can avoid costly repairs, prevent water damage, and ensure the smooth flow of wastewater. And if all else fails, you can call up JSL Drainage to fix the problem for you.  When drain pipe repair is necessary, call our team of drainage professionals who can assess the situation and recommend the most suitable repair method, restoring your home’s drainage system to optimal efficiency.

Dealing with a Drain Blocked by Gravel

Causes, Solutions, and Prevention

Blocked drains are an inconvenience no one wants to deal with. Whether it’s a slow-draining sink, a backed-up toilet, or water pooling in your yard, a blocked drain can disrupt your daily life. One common cause of such blockages is gravel. When gravel finds its way into your drainage system, it can wreak havoc.

What Causes Gravel Blockages?

Construction and Landscaping: Construction work or landscaping projects near your property can lead to gravel ending up in your drains. Heavy machinery, digging, or even strong rain can dislodge gravel and transport it into your drainage system.

Poor Drainage Design: In some cases, inadequate drainage design may allow gravel to enter your drainage system. This is especially true if there are gaps or openings that gravel can easily pass through.

Signs of a Gravel-Blocked Drain

Recognising the signs of a blocked drain early can save you from more extensive and costly repairs. Look out for:

Effective Solutions for Gravel Blockages

Manual Removal: In some cases, you may be able to access the blockage and manually remove the gravel. However, this is not always possible, especially if the gravel has travelled deep into the drainage system.

Use of Drain Snakes or Augers: Drain snakes or augers are effective tools for dislodging gravel blockages. These tools can reach deep into your pipes and break up the gravel, allowing it to wash away.

Hydro-Jetting: Hydro-jetting involves using high-pressure water to blast away blockages. This method is effective for clearing stubborn gravel blockages and cleaning the entire drainage system.

Professional Plumbing Services: If you are unable to clear the blockage on your own, it’s best to consult our Drainage team.  We can unblock all sorts of blocked drains in Glasgow and have the expertise and equipment to address even the most challenging blockages effectively.

Preventive Measures

Preventing gravel from entering your drainage system is the best way to avoid blockages. Here are some preventive measures:

Gravel Barriers: If you’re undergoing construction or landscaping projects, use gravel barriers to contain the gravel and prevent it from entering your drainage system.

Regular Maintenance: Schedule regular inspections and maintenance of your drainage system. This can help identify potential blockages before they become major problems.

Proper Landscaping: Be mindful of your landscaping design. Ensure that gravel is not placed near drainage openings or sloping areas where it can easily wash into the drains.

Install Drain Filters: Consider installing drain filters or screens to catch debris before it enters your drainage system.

A drain blocked with gravel can be a frustrating and messy issue to deal with. By understanding the causes, recognising the signs, and taking preventive measures, you can reduce the likelihood of gravel blockages.

Dealing with drainage problems in Autumn

Tackling blocked drains in Autumn

As the vibrant colours of summer fade and leaves start to carpet the ground, autumn’s arrival brings with it a distinct charm.

However, this picturesque season also presents challenges, particularly when it comes to blocked drains and other drainage problems. The combination of falling leaves, increased rainfall, and cooler temperatures can lead to a variety of drainage issues that can affect both residential and commercial areas. Which is why we wanted to talk about common drainage problems in Glasgow this autumn and provide essential tips to address and prevent them.

Clogged Gutters

One of the most prevalent drainage problems during autumn is clogged gutters. Falling leaves and debris accumulate in gutters, hindering the flow of rainwater from the roof to the downspouts. When gutters are clogged, water can overflow, causing potential damage to the roof, walls, and foundation of a building.

To combat clogged gutters, you should make it a routine to clean them regularly during autumn. Installing gutter guards can also be a proactive measure to prevent leaves and debris from entering the gutter system while still allowing water to flow freely.

Flooding and Waterlogged Lawns

The increased rainfall during autumn can lead to waterlogging in lawns and gardens, especially in areas of Glasgow with poor drainage systems. Waterlogged soil can suffocate plant roots, leading to root rot and ultimately damaging the plants. In urban areas, inadequate stormwater management can result in localized flooding, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and vehicles.

To address this issue, you should consider improving their lawn’s drainage by aerating the soil and adding organic matter to enhance water absorption. Additionally, incorporating rain gardens and installing permeable pavements can help manage stormwater runoff effectively.

Basement Flooding

If you don’t have a basement then you can skip this section but if you live in one of the many older sandstone homes in Glasgow then read on because autumn’s rainy weather can also cause basement flooding. Particularly in areas where groundwater levels rise due to heavy rainfalls. And if you live near to a river. Cracks in the foundation walls and poorly sealed basement windows and doors can exacerbate the problem.

To prevent basement flooding, homeowners should inspect their homes for any signs of water infiltration and seal any cracks or gaps.

Drainage Infrastructure Maintenance

In residential areas, the drainage infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing flooding and water build up on streets and pavements. However, during autumn, the system can become overwhelmed due to an increase in leaf debris and rainfall.

Glasgow Council must conduct regular maintenance on drainage systems, including cleaning stormwater drains and catch basins. But all it takes is littering (a problem in Glasgow) or a build up of leaves and drains can quickly block.

Autumn is a beautiful season that ushers in changing colours and cooler temperatures, but it also brings specific drainage challenges that need to be addressed proactively. Clogged gutters, waterlogged lawns, basement flooding, erosion, and drainage infrastructure issues can all impact residential areas and urban environments.

By taking preventive measures such as cleaning gutters, improving lawn drainage, sealing foundations, and maintaining drainage systems, you can better handle autumn’s drainage problems.

How we can help

At JSL Drainage, we have been clearing blocked drains in Glasgow since 2006.  Our core focus and our company mission statement is and always has been to always offer our customers in Glasgow a reliable drainage service at an honest and fair price.  Our business model is based around doing a good job that allows us to grow the company through recommendations and referrals from happy customers who have suffered from a blocked drain but have been left happy with the service and price that we have delivered.  And since 2006, that is exactly what we have done. And it seems to be a good recipe.

Our history

From what started as a one man operation, has grown over the last decade and a half into one of the top independent drainage companies in Glasgow.  And that is not just us saying that.  We are frequently being nominated as one of the top drainage and plumbing companies by ‘ThreeBestRated.co.uk” and on directory/review sites like Checkatrade.com, we have a near perfect score for reliable timekeeping, quality of service and tidiness.

So whether you have a blocked drain or you require help preparing for the Autumn rain season to begin, give us a call.

Commercial Gutter Drainage

Our drainage team may be best known for unblocking drainpipes and digging up drains in the ground but this week we were clearing drain gutters on a commercial property in Glasgow.

Thankfully, the weather was great so we got to work on our tan while completing the work but this is a service that we offer that a lot of our customers don’t actually know about. Gutters get blocked just like drains get blocked.  The only difference is that on a roof, the excess water simply gushes over the blockage whereas in a drain, the waste water has nowhere to go.  But the damage that a blocked gutter can cause can be just as damaging to a property so gutters should always be cleared.

From domestic homes gutters to commercial properties gutters, it is all part of the service for our team.  We also repair and replace downpipes.  So many of our customers have moaned about how hard it is to get a roofer to replace a downpipe for them.  They automatically assume that because it is part of a roof structure/system that it is only a roofer that can fix it.  Not the case.  At JSL Drainage, we can clear gutters and replace downpipes for customers because it is all part of the same system – getting rid of waste water.

plumber or drainage contractor

The water that comes into a property is all plumbing related.  So if you have a leaking tap (for example) then you can call our plumbing division JSL Plumbing. If the toilet is blocked, the gutters are blocked or you have a bad smell coming from the drain (because it is blocked) then you call in the drainage specialists which is JSL Drainage.

Broomhill drain pipe dig up

We were in Broomhill in the West End of Glasgow last week completing what we had thought was going to be a fairly straightforward drainage repair job.

However this job turned into a bit of a monster quite quickly as we found there were problems with the surrounding pipework as well.  Because the blonde sandstone home had well established gardens, there was a lot of vegetation to cut through and we found a lot of root cuttings inside the drain.

We managed to get there in the end and have now fixed the drainage problem the client was having.

If you live in Broomhill, Thornwood or Partick in the West End of Glasgow then you will know how easily drains can get blocked or crack because of well established vegetation.  At JSL Drainage, we are a top level drainage firm based in Glasgow. We are highly recommended by our extremely happy customers who have called on us to fix their blockages regardless of the time of the day.

We do not charge a call out fee and will only begin work on your issue if you are happy for us to proceed.

blocked drain caused by vegetation growth

Across the West End, we have built our reputation as a reputable firm that are punctual, polite, efficient, honest and above all – one that gets the job done. We have invested in some of the latest drainage equipment to ensure that the blockage can be fixed.

While so many of the blocked drain problems that our customers suffer from are internal drainage issues, there is actually a near equal split in internal and external drainage problems that we deal with each and every day in Glasgow. Cracked drainage pipes and blocked drains are both common problems that can cause problems with our customers Gardens.  The water that would normally drain away simply overflows and floods into the garden which sadly causes a smelly bog.

Getting this dealt with quickly is important.  Getting it fixed properly is equally important. If you have a blocked drain – we can unblock it. If you have a broken drainage pipe – we can fix it And if you need a new drainage system added – we can fit it.

Since 2006, we have grown to become one of the leading drainage companies in Glasgow.  We have done it through consistently offering a quality service at a competitive and fair price.  Our team are fully qualified and skilled in all areas of drainage and are equipped with the latest in drainage equipment.  We constantly reinvest in our team and our equipment because we don’t just want to beat the best – we want to be the best in drainage in Glasgow.

So if you have problems with the drainage system in your Garden, call JSL Drainage today.

Shallow Drain

Dealing with a shallow drain that had cracked.

If you have seen the movie ‘Shallow Grave’ that was filmed in Glasgow in the early 90’s you will know the premise of the move and the reason for the title being that the flat mates, trying to get away with things, dug the grave too shallow.

Thankfully in our case we weren’t dealing with a shallow grave, rather a shallow drain pipe.

A customer had a cracked drain pipe that required excavating.  When we dug up the the pipe, we found that it was only 40cm under the surface.  Why is this an issue?  Because main pipes should be AT LEAST 75cm below the ground to protect them from frost.  Something that happens quite a lot in the winter in Glasgow.  By digging the pipe deeper, the warmer soil protects the pipe from the ground frost.  But in this case, the pipe had been installed by another plumber incorrectly.  Because of that, the pipe has cracked.

shallow drain

At JSL Drainage, we are one of the leading drainage companies in Glasgow.  We got to this position not because of one thing or the other.  It is because we offer a complete package.  We are experienced.  We are qualified. We are skilled and we are professional.  We turn up when we say we will, we use the proper tools for the job and we ensure that the work we carry out is to the highest standards.

So many of the jobs we get called out to are caused by builders pouring left over cement dust down a drain, poor plumbing and lazy workmanship.  When it comes to offering a quality service, that is what we deliver.  So if you have grown sick and tired of drainage companies not turning up on time, not being able to fix the blockage properly or simply being rude and unhelpful when they do turn up then maybe it is time you gave JSL Drainage a call.

When we found a gas pipe through a drain pipe

We often say ‘we have seen it all’ in the world of drainage but we may have to correct that statement after what we saw last week.  A true classic.

Our drainage engineers were in Dumbarton helping a customer who had contacted us because their drain wouldn’t clear.  Upon an initial investigation, we concluded that the drain needed to be dug up.

Once we had excavated the area around the drain pipe to expose it we found the most ridiculous thing.  A gas engineer had run a gas pipe straight through the drain pipe!

drain pipe gas line problem for customer

The drain pipe is a mete underground and while it is hard to calculate when this would have happened, needless to say, we had to advise the customer to call Scottish Gas as this is clearly against gas regulations. Because this is actually quite a dangerous situation, they will need to deal with the gas pipe but as soon as this is done, we will be able to fit a new drain pipe and the problem will well and truly be fixed.

We are JSL Drainage and we are Glasgow’s leading Independent Drainage Company specialising in all manner of blocked drain problems (and in this case we really do mean all manner of drainage problem) for our customers across the city and the surrounding towns and villages.

We have been clearing blocked drains in Glasgow since 2006. No T-Joint

Our drainage engineers were in Hyndland in the West End of Glasgow last week helping a new customer who was having problems with their drain becoming blocked frequently.

The new customer had found us online and having never used a drainage company, called our team to get an appointment booked in.

We traced the problem to a section of drain under the ground and this required excavating.  We excavated around the drain pipe and found the problem.  Rather than find a t joint where there should have been one, someone has simply stuffed a straight pipe into another straight pipe!

To fix the issue, more digging was required but we managed to excavate the drain pipe and replace the pipe section that was causing the issue.

The customer now has a free flowing drain again and is understandably happy with the result.

Drain excavation can be a daunting task but considering that the majority of drain pipes in your home are underneath the ground, excavation is a necessary evil in order for us to complete the job.  Thankfully, we are one of the leading drainage companies in Glasgow and with nearly two decades of experience in the industry, you can rest assured that you are in safe hands with us.

Heavy rain leads to overflowing toilet

In the winter months, the rain can fall down hard in Glasgow.

And while this is normally bad for standard flooding of gardens and blocking external drains, we have just handled a new job for a customer that didn’t get off very lightly.

The drain in their home blocked because of the heavy rain which ended up pushing the waste back up the toilet and into the bathroom.

Not a pretty sight.

While toilets can easily block because home owners have flushed wet wipes, nappies etc down them and they have become stuck, it is less common for a toilet to overflow because of the amount of rain water.  This was caused by a blockage in the drain pipe and the heavy rain simply helped accelerate the issue.  As always, we only every advise you to flush the three P’s down the toilet.  Pee, Poo and (toilet) Paper.  A toilet is designed to handle the three P’s.  It is not designed to handle the left overs of a Sunday Roast, kitchen roll, wet wipes etc.

when the contents of your toilet come back up

How we fixed the problem

We began by cleaning up some of the mess so we could simply access the toilet.  Considering it was covered in a thick layer of human waste, we needed to ensure a safe working environment for our team.  Once this was completed, we could set to work unblocking the toilet by removing the blocking further down the pipe.  Once this was complete. we could help with the further cleaning up of the area.  Thankfully the surfaces were laminated so they were easy to clean.  If it had been carpet, there is a high chance that the fabric would not have been able to have been cleaned properly from the blockage.

Blocked Toilets can happen because of flooding, collapsed drains, blocked drains….any number of reasons. Having a fast responding drainage company to call upon in these situations can be worth its weight in gold.  After all, when your toilet is overflowing with human waste, do you really have the time to start looking through all of the reviews for the various local drainage companies that you can call on?  Of course not.  Which is why you should save our number on your phone now so that should the worst happen, we are just a phone call away.  We don’t charge a call out fee, all of our work is guaranteed and we pride ourselves on following a selection of governing values to ensure that the entire JSL team can provide you with the same consistent service, time and time again.

A drain pipe was blocked in Alexandria

Unfortunately not every blocked drain is a simple inconvenience.  Sometimes, it can become a messy job.

And today was one of those times.  We were called out to Alexandria by a new customer who had found us online.  They had a blocked drain pipe in their flat and were unable to drain away water from the kitchen sink or dishwasher in the kitchen.

Upon arrival, we began an inspection of the site to locate the drain pipe that had become blocked.

blocked drain pipe in Alexandria

The blockage was in an old cast iron drain pipe on the exterior of the building.  Due to the location of the blockage, the only way to access it was by cutting a small hole in the drain pipe to then use pressure to force the blockage away.

While this did the trick, it did also create a hell of a mess as all the blocked waste water escaped out onto the street.  It had to be done however and once we had patched and repaired the drain pipe, we began cleaning up the mess because while other drainage companies may have simply walked away at that point, our company values are what make JSL Drainage the company we are. It isn’t about being one thing or the other. It is about meeting our own expectations and exceeding yours. We pride ourselves on our honest and friendly approach whilst knowing that we have the proper skills to get the job done properly for you. Our customers faith in our services is important to us which is why each any every day, our values guide us to be the best drainage services provider in Glasgow.
