A lovely review from a new customer

We are not in this job for the glory – we are in this job because we know we can offer a great service and deliver results.  Something that unfortunately is not always the case for some other drainage companies in Glasgow.

And while we don’t go looking for reviews, we do greatly appreciate it when customers go out of their way to say nice things about us.  And that is exactly what has just happened with a new customer in Bearsden….

Many thanks for the excellent service from both JSL and Lilly today. Prompt, Courteous, Highly Professional, Excellent Workmanship and Extremely Efficient and Tidy. Hope this sums up what a great Company and Employees you have under your wings. Sincere thanks for all.

Frozen pipes

The big freeze we had before Christmas caused all sorts of problems for homes across Glasgow.

Especially when it came to drainage pipes.

As we all know, water expands when it freezes and within water pipes in your home, if there is not enough pipe lagging, the pipes are exposed to the elements and are far more likely to freeze.  The water expands and puts more stress on the drain pipe.  If enough stress is applied, the drain pipe can crack and cause a leak. And that is exactly what happened to many people in Glasgow.  Their drain pipes would freeze, crack and begin leaking.  This was a big issue if the drain pipe in question was the one connected to your toilet.  We always advice clients that they need to call us should they notice their drain has become slow.  Why?  Because when the pipes freeze, there is more water and debris within the pipe and that can cause more pressure build up.

Since the big freeze, we have been inundated with call outs because of leaking drains and when the weather becomes warmer, we will be busy fitting more pipe lagging to help prevent this from happening again.

If you have suffered from frozen pipes this winter and would like to know more about pipe lagging then give us a call today.

How to look after your drains in the Glasgow winter

Global warming and climate change have meant that a white Christmas is not a lot less likely than it once was.

However, as you will be aware if you go outside right now, it is really really cold.  Sub zero in fact.  Freezing conditions, the wind, rain, ice and snow that comes in the winter across Glasgow can play havoc with your homes drainage system.  So we wanted to put some top tips together for your on things you can do to keep your drains in peak condition through this winter and many winters to come.

1 – Inspect your drains thoroughly

It may be dark when you get home from work but a simple walk around the house with a torch looking at the drains can highlight any issues such as debris build up that could easily cause an issue with the drains this winter.  Blocked gutters and downpipes can cause a large amount of rain water to redirect into your home through gaps and cracks in the way so being able to spot these early can be very important.  A blocked drain that freezes can easily crack with the expansion of the ice, causing water to leak into the walls of your home everytime it rains.

If you would prefer not to deal with these issues, call us today.  We can handle it for you.

2 -Ground drains/Soakaways

You can’t stop it from raining but you can ensure that your soakaways are free from obstruction and free flowing.  If you neglect them, they can easily struggle to cope with the build up of rain water as winter water tables rise causing potential surface flooding.  If your soakaways are blocked or obstructed, call us today and we can clear them for you.

3 – Frozen pipes

Many homeowners turn their boilers off during the day when they are at work.  But this can cause the pipes to freeze.  You should keep your central heating at a consistent temperature to minimise any risks that your homes pipes will freeze.

At JSL, through our heating and drainage services, we can ensure that your home will be warm and safe from freezing pipes.  If you don’t have pipe lagging fitted to your pipes, now may be the time to do it!

4 – Stopcock erosion

A genuine questions.  When was the last time you used your Stopcock?  Two years ago?  Five?  For a lot of people, the answer could actually be ‘Never’ or ‘I don’t know where it is’. Like any part of your homes plumbing system, your stopcock can deteriorate over time so it is important to open and close it every so often to make sure it is working properly.

5 – Fix repairs fast!

While we would obviously prefer it if you called us instead of any other drainage company but if you find a leak, however small it may seem, get it fixed fast.  The problem is not going to go away and is only going to get worse.  At JSL Drainage, we offer a free call out service and our service is driven by quality and real business values.  Call us today to fix your drainage problem.

Toilet tubes down the drain

Do you remember Blue Peter growing up as a kid?  We do.

The amount of amazing crafts that were put together using nothing more than some left over cardboard toilet paper rolls. Ahh the good old days.

But while toilet tubes are great for building kids crafts with, they are not supposed to be flushed down the toilet.  Yet that is exactly what a customer recently tried to do.  Cardboard can break down over time but unless it is done under significant force, cardboard tubes flushed down a toilet will very easily block the drain pipe and you will be in a whole world of poo problems.

At JSL, we are firm fans of the three p’s. Pee, Poo and (toilet) Paper.  That is what a toilet is designed to flush away.  It is not designed for flushing away food waste.  It is not designed to get rip of wet wipes and it certainly is not designed for cardboard.

So as we approach Christmas, please remember that if it is not one of the three p’s – DON’T FLUSH IT!!!

Another day, another drain excavation

Winter may be fast approaching and more and more people are understandably feeling the pinch of rising energy costs. But when it rains it pours and all too often in our experience, that rain can block your drain.  Which is exactly what happened to one of our customers earlier this week. They heavy downpour of rain that hit washed a lot of soil into the drain causing a significant blockage and flooding into the garden.  Sadly, the only way to solve this problem was with a drain excavation service.

At JSL Drainage, we are one of the leading drainage companies in Glasgow and in more than a decade of servicing Glasgow, we know a thing or two about blocked drains.

While no customer ever wants to have to deal with something like a drain excavation, it is a necessary evil sometimes.  We always work as hard as we can to minimise the disruption to your land and your day. And as always, we do out upmost to ensure that your drainage problem is fixed and that you can get on with the more important things in life like counting down the days to Christmas.

Things you should never flush down a toilet

It may seem obvious but we have been in this game long enough to know that no matter how often we say it, people will still flush the wrong things down the toilet – causing drains blockages to happen.

A toilet is designed to deal with pee, poo and toilet paper (the three P’s).  Nothing more, nothing less.  But for so many houses in Glasgow, that doesn’t seem simple enough.  So we have put together a wee list of things that you SHOULD NEVER flush down the toilet.  Hope it helps.  And if it doesn’t and you get a blocked toilet….you know where to find us.

Medication

Some medication can take a long time to fully dissolve and breakdown in water. In that time, they are large obstacles just waiting to get stuff and cause a blockage in the toilet.  That and the fact that adding medication to the water supply is effectively polluting it.  The chemicals can then end up in the rivers and oceans causing harm to marine life.  So don’t do it.

Wet Wipes

Don’t trust the new ‘toilet friendly’ wet wipes.  Wet wipes should never be flushed down the toilet because they don’t break up in the sewage system.  They cause blockages in your homes drainage system and they cause blockages in the main sewage system.

Kitchen Roll

Yes it may be paper but it is not toilet paper.  Kitchen roll paper (aka paper towels) are designed to be super absorbent and can be tough enough to handle kitchen worktop wipe downs.  This means that they can easy get stuck in your drain pipe, increase in size and they absorb lots of liquid and cause a brilliant dam in your drain pipes – causing them to block.

Condoms

Condoms do not biologically degrade. Condoms can easily stick to the inside of a drain pipe. They are a prophylactic that all too often ends up in the drainage system and are a very good way of blocking a toilet or drain pipe.  So don’t flush them down the toilet.

Nappies

If you have ever held a nappy full of a babies poo, you may now be thinking ‘how on earth would someone flush that in the first place! Many have tried, few have succeeded. If you did somehow manage to flush a nappy past the u-bend of the toilet drain pipe, that is probably as far as it will go.  Use a bin.

Dental Floss

Dental floss is one of those things that you can easily understand why people flush them.  But they do not biodegrade and if you flush enough of them, they turn into ‘fishing nets’ of floss webbing that can create barricades in your drain pipe, causing it to block.

Ear Buds/Cotton Buds

It is a plastic stick with some fluff on each end of it.  Of course it is going to get stuck in the drain pipe if you flush it.  The cotton doesn’t dissolve and the plastic can easily get caught in any other debris.  Bin it – don’t flush it.

Food

What’s the difference between food and poo?  Surely they are both okay for the toilet?  Yes food will eventually break down but only some food does it quickly.  A poo easily breaks into smaller bits as it flows down a drain.  The fat cut offs from last nights steak?  Not so much.  Don’t flush food down the toilet.  Bin it.

Hair

For those with long, flowing hair, it may seem all to easy to pull out the loose strands of hair collected in your hair brush and flush them down the toilet.  But like the dental floss, this will easily cause a blocked drain if you do it too often. Use a bin.

Chewing Gum

Common sense tells us that you all know this is a bad idea.  But so many people still do it.  Chewing gum is sticky, does not degrade and does not disintegrate.  It is the ideal material to help block a toilet.

Fats, oils and grease

We have been called out a fair few times over the years because a Sunday roast has caused a blocked drain.  The hot fats from a roast leg of lamb (for example) may be a liquid and look like they will easily flow down a drain pipe but they solidify quickly, stick to the inner lining of the drain pipe and form the catalyst for a future drain blockage.  Wait for the fats to solidify then you can throw the remains out in the bin.

Plasters

A plaster is a sticky piece of plastic that does not biodegrade.  What do people thing will happen once they flush the plaster down the toilet?  It will get caught and form a parachute to catch other debris that gets flushed down the drain causing a blockage.

Gold Fish

And finally goldfish.  The TV and movies of this world have taught us that a dead goldfish needs to go down the toilet.  It is in a way, its funeral.  But it is not, it is far more likely to be a cause of a blocked toilet.  So either bury the fish or bin it. Don’t flush it.

Over the years, we have constantly reinvested in our team and our equipment.  It has allowed us to grow into a stronger company that can offer our customers more than just the standard blocked drain services.  From thermal imaging cameras that allow us to trace blocked drain sources without having to open up walls and lift up flooring, to the equipment we use to unblock the drains themselves.

One tonne bags will definitely block a drain

As you may expect, we find some truly fascinating things down drain pipes. Some are strange but make sense such as a child’s toy that has fallen down the garden drain pipe.  Others are to be expected such as hair and food waste that has got stuck.

Others however are only there because of others laziness and lack of care.  And that is exactly why we were called out to a job in the West End of Glasgow this month because a blocked drain had been caused by none other than some bags.

blocked drain because of heavy duty bags

These aren’t the plastic bags you would associate with supermarkets etc. Oh no. These are the specialised ‘one tonne’ bags used in construction for the likes of laying new garden driveways with gravel.  While we don’t want to point fingers, it is very unlikely that these bags simply got blown by a strong wind under the manhole cover.  Someone has clearly put them their because they were too lazy to properly remove and dispose of them.

The bags were causing the blocked drain so once they were removed and the drain pipe was cleared of the build up of sludge and excess gravel that had also been deposited in the drainpipe – it was clear and free flowing again.

On to the next job.

Thunderstorms cause blocked drains

The headline may seem quite obvious but after the heatwave that we had, it should be no surprise that the following thunderstorm and heavy downpour of rain cause quite a few drains to block.

But it wasn’t just the huge amount of rain that fell, it was the top soil that gets washed away with it that causes the problems.

The heatwave dried out the top of the soil leaving it dry and crumbly.  The organic matter which normally binds the soil together is non existent so when the rain does come, it clears a lot of this soil away with it.

This build up of soil can then easily block drain pipes which were already heading towards a blockage and because the drain gets blocked further down the pipe, it is not the work of a plunger.  You need something stronger.

Enter JSL Drainage. With no call out charge and all our drainage work and parts guaranteed, our reputation and quality workmanship has seen us constantly grow through the years to become one of the leading drainage experts in Glasgow and the surrounding Towns and Villages to deal with your burst pipes and blocked drain emergencies.

So after the heatwave and heavy rain, if you have noticed that your drains are draining more slowly it is most likely because you have the beginnings of a blocked drain and need to get it fixed before it becomes a real problem.

School may be back but the chaos continues

The Scottish School holidays are now over and across Glasgow, parents can breath a sigh of relief as their children go back to school.

No more ‘can I have a snack’ for at least the hours between 9 & 3 Monday to Friday now.

But just because the kids have gone back does not mean the chaos has stopped.  And that is exactly why we found ourselves in the North of Glasgow unblocking a drain for a customers how because of ‘arts and crafts’.  During the summer holidays, one of the home owners daughters was passing the day with some arts and crafts which as many parent will support, can become quite messy.  So on this occasion, it is clear that what they were done was pour the left over glitter, plastic crystal beads, tin foil snowflakes etc down the kitchen sink.

As we always say, there are only three things that should be flushed down the toilet and they are the three P’s.  Pee, Poo and Paper (specifically toilet paper).

arts and crafts in the kitchen sink

Arts & Crafts do not fall under any of those categories so it was no surprise then that the drain became blocked.  When you have a blocked drain, you can try and fix it yourself with a plunger but when this fails and you need a professional drainage company, there is only one call you should make and that is to JSL Drainage.  We are a local, Glasgow based drainage company specialising in all forms of domestic drain unblocking.  So whether your kid has poured their arts and crafts left overs down the drain or someone has flushed nappies down the toilet, we are just a phone call away.

How many sheets of toilet paper should you use?

It may seem obvious but the most common cause of a blocked toilet is toilet paper itself.  If you use too much toilet paper, you run the risk of blocking the toilet.

It may seem strange that a toilet can block because of one of the three things that get flushed down the toilet (the three P’s) but it is true.  And that begs the question.  How many sheets of toilet paper should you use when going number 2?

You have probably never had to think about how much toilet paper you use?  That is of course expect during the initial Covid-19 outbreak when, for some strange reason, people were buying up toilet paper left right and centre.

toilet paper

A household of four people in the UK needs just over one roll of toilet paper a day which equates to 8 rolls a week and 32 rolls in a month.  Most people use the toilet on average 4 to 10 times a day depending on age, strength of bladder etc.  And the average consumer uses just shy of 10 sheets of toilet paper per ‘sitting’.

This doesn’t really answer the question ‘How many sheets of toilet paper should you use?’ but the answer comes down to common sense.  A toilet is designed to flush away pee, poo and toilet paper.  It is not designed to flush pee, poo and an entire roll of toilet paper in one flush.  If you need more toilet paper than usual, keep this in mind.  There is no harm in having a mid point flush to clear the basin and make the rest of the ‘sitting’ easier to flush away.  Remember, the average person flushes the toilet up to 2,500 times a year.  All it takes is one flush with too much toilet paper and you have yourself a blocked toilet.

And what are you going to do in that situation?  Call JSL of course.
