How many sheets of toilet paper should you use?

It may seem obvious but the most common cause of a blocked toilet is toilet paper itself.  If you use too much toilet paper, you run the risk of blocking the toilet.

It may seem strange that a toilet can block because of one of the three things that get flushed down the toilet (the three P’s) but it is true.  And that begs the question.  How many sheets of toilet paper should you use when going number 2?

You have probably never had to think about how much toilet paper you use?  That is of course expect during the initial Covid-19 outbreak when, for some strange reason, people were buying up toilet paper left right and centre.

toilet paper

A household of four people in the UK needs just over one roll of toilet paper a day which equates to 8 rolls a week and 32 rolls in a month.  Most people use the toilet on average 4 to 10 times a day depending on age, strength of bladder etc.  And the average consumer uses just shy of 10 sheets of toilet paper per ‘sitting’.

This doesn’t really answer the question ‘How many sheets of toilet paper should you use?’ but the answer comes down to common sense.  A toilet is designed to flush away pee, poo and toilet paper.  It is not designed to flush pee, poo and an entire roll of toilet paper in one flush.  If you need more toilet paper than usual, keep this in mind.  There is no harm in having a mid point flush to clear the basin and make the rest of the ‘sitting’ easier to flush away.  Remember, the average person flushes the toilet up to 2,500 times a year.  All it takes is one flush with too much toilet paper and you have yourself a blocked toilet.

And what are you going to do in that situation?  Call JSL of course.

Prescription Medicine down the drain

The three P’s for toilet flushing do not stand for Pee, Poo and Pharmaceutical products.

The third P is in actual fact P for Paper as in Toilet Paper.

It may seem like a good idea to flush unused and out of date medication but it is not.  And not just because of the potential for blocked drains.  Flushing old medication down the toilet can kill off important bacteria in the water supply and contaminate groundwater, even having an impact on wildlife further down the road.

Flushing medicine down the toilet does not means that it will dissolve automatically.  It can take around 30 minutes for medicine to breakdown in a stomach.  And that is full of acids designed to break things down.  Mucky toilet water may be nasty stuff but it is a lot less acidic that what you have in your stomach.  So those medical pills can take hours, even days to break down.  And in all that time, they are acting as solid roadblocks that can only help to cause a blockage in your drain. Everybody Pees and Poos.  It is as sure a thing as death and taxes.  A toilet is not designed to flush anything other than Pee, Poo and Toilet Paper.  If you flush medicine down the toilet then decide to go number two, that medicine can help to create a blockage stopping the human waste from properly draining. And you would be truly amazed at how long a human poo can take to breakdown.  The rise in camping thanks to the Covid pandemic has created a real problem in countryside locations as the poo is simply not biodegrading quickly enough.  In America, certain locations are now selling special backs for human waste that can speed up the process.

But all those medical pills with at least one poo a day getting flushed down the same toilet can easily lead to a blocked drain.

And that is where we come in.

We are a local, reliable blocked drain repair expert since 2006. At JSL Drainage, we have become one of the top Glasgow drainage companies for workmanship, timekeeping, courtesy and tidiness.

With no call out charge and all our drainage work and parts guaranteed, our reputation and quality workmanship has seen us constantly grow through the years to become one of the leading drainage experts in Glasgow and the surrounding Towns and Villages to deal with your burst pipes and blocked drain emergencies.

So what should you do with your old medicine?

Keep the medicine in its original container (marking out the patient details of course) and return to your local pharmacy who can dispose of the medicine safely.

Can your poo block the toilet drain?

If we have said it once, we will say it a thousand times.  Everybody pees and poops.  But what happens if that big poo blocks the toilet?

It may sound childish but it is a serious issue and it can indeed happen.

Large poos can come along because you have, surprise surprise had a large meal or have been struggling with constipation.  And that large poo can easily get caught in the toilet drain, especially if the drain was already on its way to being blocked because of other things that have been flushed down it – such as sanitary wipes, cotton buds etc.

So what can you do about it?  Well, from a health point of view, try eating more fibre.  From a blocked toilet point of view – call the professionals.  We are JSL Drainage and as the name would suggest, we are a drainage contractor.

Founded in the outskirts of Bearsden in the North of Glasgow, we first started out as a simple plumbing and drainage business. Why you should not use drain cleaners

Do you care about the environment?  Then stop using drain cleaning chemicals to unblock your drain.

The COP26 conference in Glasgow helped to increase the need for everyone to play their part in going green.  Whether that be in switching to electric cars, cutting down on their red meat consumption or one of the many other options to help reduce our carbon impact on the environment.  We all want to do our part.  But pouring nasty chemicals down the drain when you have noticed it start to drain slower than normal is not going to help the situation. And we mean that both for the environment AND for unblocking your drain.

Drain Unblocking Chemicals are bad (aka toxic)

Drain Cleaning Chemicals that you find in the supermarket shelves are highly toxic and bad for the environment.  The fumes of the chemicals are dangerous, can cause irritation to your skin and contaminate the water supply which requires a lot of energy to clean and make safe for drinking.

Drain cleaning chemicals are actually so dangerous and toxic that they can actually damage your drain pipes. They work using an acid solution designed to erode the blockage away. If you use drain cleaners a lot, you are helping to wear away the inside of the drain pipe which can lead to fractures and even a collapse of the drain pipe.

Drain cleaning chemicals are not effective

You would expect us to say this but let us explain. Drain cleaning chemicals can provide a fast solution to unblocking your drain but they are, and always will be, a short term solution. They are only effective on blockages and obstructions that are near to the entrance to the drain pipe (where a plunger would be just as effective) and most of the time, the chemical agent will not be enough to completely remove the obstruction, only reduce its impact for a period of time.

What should you do instead?

If you believe that you have a blocked drain and have noticed a slow draining sink hole then the best option is to call a drainage contractor like ourselves.

We are JSL Drainage and we are Glasgow’s leading Independent Drainage Company specialising in all manner of blocked drain problems for our customers across the city and the surrounding towns and villages.

What is the drainage problem?

Whether the drain is completely block or is simply draining more slowly than usual, calling in the professionals is always the smart move.  With the amount of things that get flushed, poured and pushed down the drainage pipes of your home, it is little wonder that eventually it will become blocked. A blocked drain is both a health risk and inconvenience. From not being able to use your toilet (an inconvenience) to dealing with the issues of bad smells emitting from a blocked drain in the kitchen sink or a blocked toilet (the overflowing human waste can cause potential biohazard health risks), a blocked drain is not something you want to leave too long unattended.

Is it okay to flush hair down the toilet?

The human body is covered in hair but it is the hair on the head that can cause the most problems when it comes to flushing things down the toilet.

The human body can loose around one hundred strands of hair PER DAY! Don’t  panic though because we have on average around 100,000 hairs on our head so this is small potatoes on the grand scale of things.  Anyway, the big question is this. Is it safe to flush you down the toilet without causing the toilet to block?

It is an easy question to ask. After all, a lot of people brush their hair in the bathroom and if your hairbrush gets clogged with loose hair strands, it is easy to simply turn to the toilet and flush your old hair away.

However the answer to the question is a big NO!

loose hair down the toilet

You should never flush hair down the toilet.  Yes it may seem like the easy option and you are probably thinking what can a few loose strands of hair do.  A lot is what they can do.

Hair does not dissolve in water and can easily get caught in the drain pipe.  One strand can catch and tangle another, and another, and another.  Eventually you have enough of a bundle of hair, waste and toilet paper that the toilet drain pipe can become blocked.

Remember that the humble toilet is designed for one thing.  Flushing pee and poo down the drain.  The drain pipe that connects to the toilet is sized accordingly to cope with the demands of just this.  It is not designed to also be a garbage disposal for your greasy Sunday roast, wet wipes, ear buds etc.

So if you flush a clump of old hair down the toilet, what you are effectively doing is casting a fishing net to try and capture more waste in the future.

You may now be thinking ‘well I have been doing it for years and nothing bad has happened’.  Well in that case you have been lucky.  And if you feel like ignoring our advise then that is fine.  We just ask that you save our phone number into your phone so that when you do get a blocked toilet drain because of all the hair that you have been flushing down there, you can call us to fix the blocked drain.

Festive Opening Times

We are only three days away from Christmas and many of you will already be on your festive holidays.

But what about us? Well why a blocked drain can strike at any point, we all need time off in the year and, considering how the last year (and the one before that) have gone, we deserve a few days off as well.

And that is exactly what we are doing. The JSL Drainage office will be shut from the 24th December to the 5th January.

We hope you have a fantastic (and safe) Christmas Day and while restrictions may limit how you celebrate New Year, a great Hogmanay as well.

Where does the coffee grounds go?

For some of us, the morning ritual is a hot shower.  For others it is a good cup of tea.  And for a lot of residents in Glasgow (and the World let’s be honest), a morning cup of joe is the essential first steps to a good day.

We are of course talking about coffee.  Now while some of us use instant coffee for our caffeine boost, others prefer something closer to the real thing that you would get in a coffee shop.  Whether that involves filter ground coffee or a bean to cup machine – there are a lot of options out there.

coffee grounds block drain

But when the coffee has been made and the precious caffeine been consumed, what do you do with the coffee grounds?

Some of us flush it down the toilet, others scoop it into the bin.  And others pour it down the sink.

Guess who is going to get a blocked drain at some point?

In the past, many home owners assumed that it was absolutely fine to pour coffee grounds down the sink drain.  There were some who assumed that the granules of coffee actually helped clean the drain of other obstructions (as if it was sandpaper or something).  But as many wise people will have noticed, coffee grounds are actually quite sticky and tough and do not simply degrade like some other waste that gets poured down the sink.  And because of this, coffee grounds can all too often create a fairly impressive blockage in a drain that takes some real effort to unblock.

And that is exactly what happened this week for a customer in the West End of Glasgow.   With so many people still working from home as part of a hybrid working model, the amount of coffee consumed at home has naturally gone up.  And for this customer, it finally caught up with them as they drain became blocked.  It is not obvious that coffee grounds will block a drain so they tried to use drain unblocking chemicals which are pretty nasty things anyway but are also pretty useless for any blockage more than just below the main drain sink hole (which is exactly where a normal plunger would work wonders anyway).

So after trying and failing with this method, they turned to google and who should they find but one of the best drainage companies in Glasgow (if we do say so ourselves (and backed by hundreds of 5 star reviews)), JSL Drainage.

Common reasons for a blocked drain

A blocked drain is a pain in the backside.  There is no such thing as a convenient blockage.

And while we are very good at unblocking a drain, knowing how drains get blocked can really help you to make sure the drain doesn’t get blocked in the first place.

So here is some of the top things that can cause a blocked drain so that you can try and ensure it doesn’t block yours.

1 – Body hair

Loose hair can easily be washed of our bodies as we have a bath or shower.  It binds with grease, bubbles etc to bond together and form blockages.  If you want to make sure you don’t get a blocked drain because of loose hairs then add a drain guard on your shower or bath sink hole.

2 – Soap

Traditional soap bars are made with fats (have you seen the movie Fight Club?).  The fats in the soap mix with the water to create soap scum which can clog bathroom drains. A way to avoid this is to switch the body gels though they do use a lot more plastic packaging which is not good for the environment.

3 – Food waste

Moving away from bathroom drains and into the kitchen, food waste should never go down the drain. Coffee grinds for example do not break down.  Other foods contain fats and oils, so a bit like the above soap, can create blockages.

4 – Toiler Paper

We don’t mean wet wipes etc.  We mean actual toilet paper.  Too much of it at one time can block your toilet and stop it from flushing.  A lot of the time, this can be fixed with a plunger but be cautious when using too much toilet paper.

5 – Tree roots

Across Glasgow, there are some very old trees (and a lot of new ones) with underground root networks that are constantly looking to expand.  So the drain pipe can be blocked because a root has entered the drain and grown and grown to block the whole thing.  We spend a lot of time fixing blocked drains because of tree roots and the size of some of the roots that we pull out are very impressive.

6 – Dirt

If you ever look at the inner curve of a river, you will see the smooth silt/dirt deposits caused by slower moving water.  All of that dirt has built up over time.  Now imaging washing some dirt off your clothes in the washing machine or a sink. The dirt goes into the drain and can begin to deposit and collect forming a blockage.

7 – Small things

This is a fairly broad category but long story short, small things can fall down the sink hole and get washed away.  Sometimes you are lucky and they make it all the way into the main sewer system.  Other times, you can catch them in the u-bend trap pipe. But other times, they get caught somewhere between the two and create a blockage.

In conclusion

Sometimes a blocked drain can be fixed by yourselves.  Other times you need a professional drainage contractor to help you.

Can you flush food down the toilet?

It is a question that has led to countless pub arguments, political tension and hours of marriage counselling.  We are of course talking about the age old question – can you flush food down the toilet?

We are of course joking about the amount of disagreements that it can cause but it is a good question nonetheless.

And the answer is that you SHOULD NOT flush food waste down the toilet.  The simply reason is that the toilet drain pipes in your home are designed to carry human paste (aka poo) and are simply not wide enough to transport food waste.  A toilet is for human waste and water as well as biodegradable toilet paper.  Food waste can block your toilet and does not easily disintegrate.

Obviously food is a very broad category.  If you flushed a liquid soup down the toilet for example, you can get away with it.  And other smaller, more delicate foods can be flushed with only a minor chance of catastrophe.

But if you want to ensure that you don’t get a blocked drain from your toilet, don’t flush food down the drain pipe.

Here is a list of food that should 100% NOT be flushed down the toilet:

So what can I do instead?

Simple – use the food recycling bin if you have one and if not, use the general bin.  If things can be composted, do that in the garden.  Fats, and oils can be put into used containers and leak proof bags before being put in the bin. There are other options than simply flushing it down the toilet.

What if I have ignored your advise, flushed food down the toilet and now have a blocked drain?

The simply answer is that you need to call a drainage contractor.  Luckily, if you are reading this, you have already found one.  We are JSL Drainage.  One of the leading local drainage companies in Glasgow.  Call us today for all your blocked drain solutions.
