A problem with bent pipes

We had an interesting call out from a client in Pollokshields this week.

Their downstairs toilet sink was draining slowly and they couldn’t figure out why.  They had tried using a plunger themselves and they had tried pouring drain unblocker down the sink hole but nothing was working.

The cause of the issue it turned out was that the plastic drain pipe under the floor had actually bent slightly.  Just a light bend – nothing too dramatic enough but it was limiting the gravitational push of the water.  Long story short, the water going down the sink hole was not generating enough weight to push the water and waste that was already in the drainage pipe.

We replaced the bent pipe section with a new section and ensured that it had enough support to prevent the same issue from happening again.

Overall it was actually a fairly straightforward fix – however if the client had not been so active in firstly trying to fix the issue themselves and secondly calling in the professional drainage expert when they couldn’t fix it themselves then the situation could have been a lot worse.

The bend would have allowed a greater build up in waste material which would have increased the weight resting inside the pipe which in turn would have increased the bend and so on.  Eventually the drainage pipe would have cracked or split open and flooded the underfloor space with drainage water.  As it was a hand basin that is not used as often as say the kitchen sink, the problem could have gone on for a long time and caused significant damage to the building and its structure.

At JSL Drainage, we would always advise an overly cautious attitude to checking out your drainage system.  If you have tried to fix an issue yourselves with no luck, just remember that we don’t charge a call out fee and all our work only begins when you have accepted our written quotation.
