We were called out to a Bearsden address in the suburbs of Glasgow because a customers garden had begun to flood with water. The reason for the flood was obvious, the drain that 2/3rds of the homes gutters drain into had blocked up and with all the rain recently, has overflown and had begun to waterlog the garden.

An initial inspection of the drain confirmed that it was indeed blocked but the confusing thing was why. There was not enough tree/vegetation that could have caused the blockage and the drain was not close to any other obvious blockage culprit. Either way, we got to work using our jet blaster to clear away the problem.
What happened next, we doubt we will ever see again. A fountain of used cigarette butts and filters came flying up from the drain like a fountain and as if by slow motion, the mother looked at the cigarette butts, looked at her (clearly guilty looking son), looked back at the cigarette butts which had now covered a good few square metres of the garden, then erupted in rage at her son for what was clearly a secret habit that had just been discovered.
It transpired that the son had been slipping out of the house at all hours to have a secret cigarette and felt the easiest thing to do to get rid of the evidence was to drop it down the drain pipe, assuming that it would drain away never to be seen again. How wrong he was. All those cigarette butts has gradually caused a blocked drain problem which began overflowing the drain and then flooding into the garden.
