Is it okay to flush hair down the toilet?

The human body is covered in hair but it is the hair on the head that can cause the most problems when it comes to flushing things down the toilet.

The human body can loose around one hundred strands of hair PER DAY! Don’t  panic though because we have on average around 100,000 hairs on our head so this is small potatoes on the grand scale of things.  Anyway, the big question is this. Is it safe to flush you down the toilet without causing the toilet to block?

It is an easy question to ask. After all, a lot of people brush their hair in the bathroom and if your hairbrush gets clogged with loose hair strands, it is easy to simply turn to the toilet and flush your old hair away.

However the answer to the question is a big NO!

You should never flush hair down the toilet.  Yes it may seem like the easy option and you are probably thinking what can a few loose strands of hair do.  A lot is what they can do.

Hair does not dissolve in water and can easily get caught in the drain pipe.  One strand can catch and tangle another, and another, and another.  Eventually you have enough of a bundle of hair, waste and toilet paper that the toilet drain pipe can become blocked.

Remember that the humble toilet is designed for one thing.  Flushing pee and poo down the drain.  The drain pipe that connects to the toilet is sized accordingly to cope with the demands of just this.  It is not designed to also be a garbage disposal for your greasy Sunday roast, wet wipes, ear buds etc.

So if you flush a clump of old hair down the toilet, what you are effectively doing is casting a fishing net to try and capture more waste in the future.

You may now be thinking ‘well I have been doing it for years and nothing bad has happened’.  Well in that case you have been lucky.  And if you feel like ignoring our advise then that is fine.  We just ask that you save our phone number into your phone so that when you do get a blocked toilet drain because of all the hair that you have been flushing down there, you can call us to fix the blocked drain.
