We were called out the other day to a South Side address because they were having an issue with their toilet not draining.
We turned up at the address at the agreed upon time and quickly got to work.
The problem wasn’t that the water wasn’t draining away, it was that it was draining away very slowly.
So we began by conducting some test flushes. From this we suspected that there might be an issue with the toilets air admittance valve so we went outside to inspect. What we quickly found was a large puddle of water by the side of the house. It hadn’t rained in over two days so there really should not have been a puddle. Another test flush exposed the fact that this ‘puddle’ was caused because a drain cover under a patio slab had blocked. This was the main drain collection point for the entire downstairs drain pipes. Because there was no grate/vent, the owner did not even know that it was there. It had simply become ‘half blocked’ which meant that while things could drain away, it was taking a lot longer for it to happen.
The owner was actually quite lucky to have called use when they did. The slow draining toilet was the first sign of what could have turned into a far bigger problem. All it would have taken was some grease from the kitchen sink to completely block the drain and then the garden would have flooded with sewage waste.
In the end, it was actually a simple blocked drain and that of course is an easy fix for one of Glasgow’s leading drainage companies.
