How many sheets of toilet paper should you use?

It may seem obvious but the most common cause of a blocked toilet is toilet paper itself.  If you use too much toilet paper, you run the risk of blocking the toilet.

It may seem strange that a toilet can block because of one of the three things that get flushed down the toilet (the three P’s) but it is true.  And that begs the question.  How many sheets of toilet paper should you use when going number 2?

You have probably never had to think about how much toilet paper you use?  That is of course expect during the initial Covid-19 outbreak when, for some strange reason, people were buying up toilet paper left right and centre.

toilet paper

A household of four people in the UK needs just over one roll of toilet paper a day which equates to 8 rolls a week and 32 rolls in a month.  Most people use the toilet on average 4 to 10 times a day depending on age, strength of bladder etc.  And the average consumer uses just shy of 10 sheets of toilet paper per ‘sitting’.

This doesn’t really answer the question ‘How many sheets of toilet paper should you use?’ but the answer comes down to common sense.  A toilet is designed to flush away pee, poo and toilet paper.  It is not designed to flush pee, poo and an entire roll of toilet paper in one flush.  If you need more toilet paper than usual, keep this in mind.  There is no harm in having a mid point flush to clear the basin and make the rest of the ‘sitting’ easier to flush away.  Remember, the average person flushes the toilet up to 2,500 times a year.  All it takes is one flush with too much toilet paper and you have yourself a blocked toilet.

And what are you going to do in that situation?  Call JSL of course.
