And while this is normally bad for standard flooding of gardens and blocking external drains, we have just handled a new job for a customer that didn’t get off very lightly.
The drain in their home blocked because of the heavy rain which ended up pushing the waste back up the toilet and into the bathroom.
While toilets can easily block because home owners have flushed wet wipes, nappies etc down them and they have become stuck, it is less common for a toilet to overflow because of the amount of rain water. This was caused by a blockage in the drain pipe and the heavy rain simply helped accelerate the issue. As always, we only every advise you to flush the three P’s down the toilet. Pee, Poo and (toilet) Paper. A toilet is designed to handle the three P’s. It is not designed to handle the left overs of a Sunday Roast, kitchen roll, wet wipes etc.
We began by cleaning up some of the mess so we could simply access the toilet. Considering it was covered in a thick layer of human waste, we needed to ensure a safe working environment for our team. Once this was completed, we could set to work unblocking the toilet by removing the blocking further down the pipe. Once this was complete. we could help with the further cleaning up of the area. Thankfully the surfaces were laminated so they were easy to clean. If it had been carpet, there is a high chance that the fabric would not have been able to have been cleaned properly from the blockage.
Blocked Toilets can happen because of flooding, collapsed drains, blocked drains….any number of reasons. Having a fast responding drainage company to call upon in these situations can be worth its weight in gold.
