Global warming and climate change have meant that a white Christmas is not a lot less likely than it once was.
However, as you will be aware if you go outside right now, it is really really cold. Sub zero in fact. Freezing conditions, the wind, rain, ice and snow that comes in the winter across Glasgow can play havoc with your homes drainage system. So we wanted to put some top tips together for your on things you can do to keep your drains in peak condition through this winter and many winters to come.
1 – Inspect your drains thoroughly
It may be dark when you get home from work but a simple walk around the house with a torch looking at the drains can highlight any issues such as debris build up that could easily cause an issue with the drains this winter. Blocked gutters and downpipes can cause a large amount of rain water to redirect into your home through gaps and cracks in the way so being able to spot these early can be very important. A blocked drain that freezes can easily crack with the expansion of the ice, causing water to leak into the walls of your home everytime it rains.
If you would prefer not to deal with these issues, call us today. We can handle it for you.
2 -Ground drains/Soakaways
You can’t stop it from raining but you can ensure that your soakaways are free from obstruction and free flowing. If you neglect them, they can easily struggle to cope with the build up of rain water as winter water tables rise causing potential surface flooding. If your soakaways are blocked or obstructed, call us today and we can clear them for you.
3 – Frozen pipes
Many homeowners turn their boilers off during the day when they are at work. But this can cause the pipes to freeze. You should keep your central heating at a consistent temperature to minimise any risks that your homes pipes will freeze.
At JSL, through our heating and drainage services, we can ensure that your home will be warm and safe from freezing pipes. If you don’t have pipe lagging fitted to your pipes, now may be the time to do it!
4 – Stopcock erosion
A genuine questions. When was the last time you used your Stopcock? Two years ago? Five? For a lot of people, the answer could actually be ‘Never’ or ‘I don’t know where it is’. Like any part of your homes plumbing system, your stopcock can deteriorate over time so it is important to open and close it every so often to make sure it is working properly.
5 – Fix repairs fast!

The problem is not going to go away and is only going to get worse. At JSL Drainage, we offer a free call out service and our service is driven by quality and real business values.
