There are quite a few ‘off the shelf’ drain unblocking chemicals that you can buy from your local supermarket with the promise to unblock your drain. You simply pour the (fairly nasty) chemicals down the sink hole, wait between 30 minutes and an hour and rinse away – hey presto.
But are they actually any good? Well to answer that, we can use a recent call out to a customers home in Anniesland. They lived in an old red sandstone 3 bedroom home which still featured the original bathtub. They had been living in the property in the West End of Glasgow for over seven years and a couple of times a year they had to pour a bottle of that chemical agent down the sinkhole because the bathtub water was draining slowly.
Well enough was enough. They finally decided that they were sick of having to add a bottle of the drain chemicals on their shopping list which, at £5 a bottle, twice a year for seven years….they had spent nearly £100. Some might say they were pouring money down the drain!!!!
Anyway. They finally decided to call a drainage expert and as one of Glasgow’s leading independent drainage firms, we were at the top of the list. We arrived at the agreed upon time, replicated the slow drainage issue then jet blasted the problem away.
You see, these drain unblocking chemicals only work up to the U bend on most blockages. So if you have a blocked drain, chances are, it is further down the drain pipe than that and the bottle of nasty chemicals is not going to do anything.
What the customer in Anniesland should have done was call JSL Drainage the very first time. We would have cleared the blockage straight away and the West End customer could have saved some money.
So there you go. If you have a slow draining bathtub, shower basin or kitchen sink that never seems to get fixed after pouring drain unblocking chemicals down it – you need to call a drainage expert.
