Why you should not use drain cleaners

The COP26 conference in Glasgow helped to increase the need for everyone to play their part in going green.  Whether that be in switching to electric cars, cutting down on their red meat consumption or one of the many other options to help reduce our carbon impact on the environment.  We all want to do our part.  But pouring nasty chemicals down the drain when you have noticed it start to drain slower than normal is not going to help the situation. And we mean that both for the environment AND for unblocking your drain.

Drain Unblocking Chemicals are bad (aka toxic)

Drain Cleaning Chemicals that you find in the supermarket shelves are highly toxic and bad for the environment.  The fumes of the chemicals are dangerous, can cause irritation to your skin and contaminate the water supply which requires a lot of energy to clean and make safe for drinking.

Drain cleaning chemicals are actually so dangerous and toxic that they can actually damage your drain pipes. They work using an acid solution designed to erode the blockage away. If you use drain cleaners a lot, you are helping to wear away the inside of the drain pipe which can lead to fractures and even a collapse of the drain pipe.

Drain cleaning chemicals are not effective

You would expect us to say this but let us explain. Drain cleaning chemicals can provide a fast solution to unblocking your drain but they are, and always will be, a short term solution. They are only effective on blockages and obstructions that are near to the entrance to the drain pipe (where a plunger would be just as effective) and most of the time, the chemical agent will not be enough to completely remove the obstruction, only reduce its impact for a period of time.
